Theater BremenAlex Beriault works across live performance, film, and sculptural installation. Beriault deals with performance as an experience that unveils deeper aspects of an individual’s own nature, revealing themselves for who they are.
In her workshop, Private Dance, people of all backgrounds and abilities —regardless of dance experience— are invited to participate in an experimental performance format that draws upon one’s natural response to music. Each participant selects their own song—without restriction of genre, artist, era, or style—that elicits a personal and authentic impulse to move: a resonance. After collecting everyone’s selected songs, Private Dance builds towards a sequence of improvised solo performances: each person, one at a time, dances alone under a spotlight to their chosen song, in their own way. Drawing from Beriault’s artistic process, guided prompts and exercises prepare participants for their solos.
Private Dance does not focus on professional dance technique, technical skill, nor polish. Come as you are and express yourself authentically during the moment your song plays. While one person dances, the rest of the group holds space off-stage, observing without judgment. Vulnerability is central: stepping into uncertainty, and moving through it.
