In the freezing world of Antarctica and the rough waves of the Southern Ocean the international group of scientists investigates if the world’s largest ice shield, East Antarctica, is at risk to melt. A global sea level rise of 52m would be the consequence. Key of their scientific work is the expertise of the ship’s crew of the research icebreaker POLARSTERN. Without them, no scientific research would be possible in these extreme conditions. Salt and Water provides a personal perspective of what an expedition really takes: a high level of personal commitment, courage and a strong awareness of the global responsibility that lies on everybody on the crew and scientists.

The POLARSTERN expedition was organised by the German Alfred Wegener Institute. The scientific cruise management was led by the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, with the participation of several national and international research groups.
