“Young Professionals” brings together both live and video performance alongside composed electronic sound. Artist Alex Beriault positions herself as the main subject in her new expanded cinema piece, in which key objects establish its spatial framework: an old photocopier/printer, a bluescreen photo backdrop, a mounted video camera, and a large flat-screen television that broadcasts what the camera records. The dynamic between the camera and screen conjures a video double of Beriault, generating an uncanny tension between her physical and digital selves.
Accompanied by a live soundtrack composed by Liesl Lindeque and Timon Gummich, the performance unfolds in three sections, each facilitating a provocative dialogue between sound and movement. As a solo performer, Beriault guides the audience through a spectrum of psychological states. By physically navigating between the objects in space, Beriault embodies a range of psychological states—stoicism, sexuality, absurdity, vulnerability, and exhaustion—culminating in an array of fluctuating female personae.
