Press release from 10.02.2023

The countdown for the eighth Filmfest Bremen will start on Saturday, 1 April 2023, with the 48-hour short film competition Klappe! made possible by Sparkasse Bremen.

On Saturday, 1 April, the curtain will rise on around forty short film premieres in the Klappe! competition at the Schauburg festival cinema. Starting at 8 p.m., they will prove how much story fits into just three minutes of running time – to a specific motto, with a specific subject, produced in just 48 hours. Motto and subject will be published on the website and on the social media channels of Klappe! and Filmfest on 17 March at 4 pm. From then on, there are exactly 48 hours until the film submission. Anyone who wants to register for the competition can do so as early as 1 March at www.filmfestbremen.de/klappe. Because watch out: The chronological order of registrations will determine the sequence of films on the evening of the premiere.

Klappe! will run for the first time with a slight time gap before the Bremen Film Festival, which takes place in Bremen from 12 to 16 April. “With Klappe! we give the audience a first taste of our festival,” says Matthias Greving, director of Filmfest Bremen, explaining the early competition on 1 April. “The phenomenal range of short films here surprises every year and, together with the audience of filmmakers and film fans, results in a terrific atmosphere that simply puts you in the mood and awakens anticipation for the film festival.” Ilona Rieke, programme director of Filmfest Bremen, is particularly looking forward to the more serious topics in addition to the funny contributions: “The amount of craftsmanship and artistic skill that goes into a short film often causes amazement. But the charm of Klappe! is the colourful mix and therefore every submission is welcome here, whether from amateurs or professionals.”

Tickets for the Klappe! evening full of short film premieres are available for 7 euros at the Schauburg cinema – online and on site – as well as via Nordwest-Ticket.

Sparkasse Bremen will also make the Klappe! competition possible in 2023 and will award prize money totalling 3,000 euros: two audience prizes of 1,000 and 500 euros, a jury prize of 1,000 euros and a special mention with 500 euros in prize money. On the evening of the event, the audience will vote on the two audience prizes. Cultural editor Alexandra Knief from the Weser-Kurier, Sat1 editor Jens Schnieders and Karin Demuth from the Künstlerhaus Bremen will deliberate on the jury prize and the honourable mention.

The short film night will be moderated by Fabian Nolte.
