Press release 14 March 2023

The actress and director Maria Schrader will be awarded the Bremen Film Prize 2023. She impressed with the wide range of her film work.
Sparkasse Bremen will award the prize together with Filmfest Bremen at a gala in Bremen’s Theater am Goetheplatz.

Maria Schrader has probably received almost all national and numerous international awards and nominations for her performances with rough edges. Her directing work has also won awards and she was the first German director ever to win the Emmy Primetime Award for her mini-series “Unorthodox”. On Thursday, 13 April, Sparkasse Bremen will award the Bremen Film Prize 2023, worth 8,000 euros, to Maria Schrader for her body of work to date. Klaus Windheuser, member of the board of Sparkasse Bremen, will present the award together with the festival trophy “The Golden Pug”.

With the Bremen Film Prize, Sparkasse Bremen honours personalities of the European film scene for many years of merit, since 2021 with a humorous and comedic focus.
Since 1999, the recipients have included international filmmakers such as Lars von Trier or Agnès Varda as well as actresses Tilda Swinton and Nina Hoss. The first winner of the new comedic focus was Hape Kerkeling; the 2022 winner was director Aki Kaurismäki. “We are very pleased to honour such a broad, artistically diverse and successful cinematic output with this year’s winner,” said Klaus Windheuser. “With her characters, portrayed with both sensitivity and authenticity, Maria Schrader makes people of all ages empathise, reflect and laugh.”

In honour of the award winner, this year’s festival programme will be expanded to include a cinematic retrospective of films by the actress, screenwriter and director.
Following the award ceremony, the gala audience will have the opportunity to experience FRANKIE FIVE STAR, the film made with participants from Bremen and partly shot in Bremen. The bizarre story of a young woman with different personalities runs in the international competition Humour/Satire and celebrates its Bremen premiere on this evening.

The award ceremony begins at 7 pm at the Theater am Goetheplatz.
Tickets priced 15 euros, reduced 12 euros are available – on site and online at Theater Bremen and via Nordwest Ticket.
